I think, at least for me, its all about opposites attracting–fire (ok technically lightening) and ice, light and dark, earnest and mischievous, brains and brawn…
I mean, you have Thor who is essentially a big, crazy strong, puppy and wants to love and get on with everyone and then there is Loki, the god of mischief himself, who had to compensate for his lack of brawn by being brainy/magic and he has a giant chip on his shoulder for many (sometimes valid) reasons but maybe a weak spot for Thor who still, despite all the shit Loki does, loves him.
Plus, they hot. And touch each other a lot. And the tension. My god.
When Thor went storming into Jotunheim he was looking to start a fight, but accidentally winds up a pawn in Odin and Laufey’s plans for a permanent peace between the realms; namely, in exchange for the return of the Casket of Ancient Winters, Laufey is offering his firstborn child Loki, the Aesir-sized sorcerer, in marriage to Thor. Such a momentous decision is not to be taken lightly, so Odin sends Thor to live on Jotunheim – without Mjolnir – for a season with Loki, to get to know his prospective consort and to teach the wilful prince some diplomatic sense. Thor is horrified, his parents are insistent and no-one really knows what Loki is thinking, but he hasn’t stopped smiling… Or, a jotun AU arranged marriage worldbuilding fic, featuring a confused Thor, a manipulative bastard Loki, Jotunheim politics, a slow burn developing relationship and a motley arrangement of characters from Marvel and myth.

Post-Avengers, Thor brings Loki to face Odin’s decree: he is stripped of his magic and confined to the palace but his true punishment is to be disowned and forced into his jotun form. Thor begins the slow process of trying to repair his relationship with Loki, and along the way discovers five new things about the jotun and one about himself.

Loki invites Thor to accompany him on an adventure; Thor is surprised when the ‘adventure’ turns out to be a visit to a live sex show at The Hidden Pearl brothel on Vanaheim. He is even more surprised when the show turns out to be an illusion of him and Loki having sex. It should have been a horribly traumatic experience, to be forgotten as soon as possible, but Thor cannot forget the sight of Loki moaning in pleasure, of how he looked as he came, of how beautiful he was screaming Thor’s name. Now he can’t look at his brother without thinking terrible things, wicked things that Loki absolutely cannot find out. Luckily, Loki is more than willing to keep taking Thor to The Hidden Pearl. All he needs to do is get it out of his system by having sex with an illusion of Loki. What could possibly go wrong?

Author’s note: an odd one, this one, as it’s a less popular fic, but it’s more rlevant now perhaps – 3 chapters, looking at Thor’s relationship with Loki in their shared past, the Avengers-time present, and a future reconcilliation (since at that point, I didn’t think the movies would give us one!).
