TOASTYSTATS: GEEKGIRLCON 2017

The above are the first half of the slides I presented at GeekGirlCon (along with some annotations to explain things I only said out loud 🙂 ) – for the second half, read more below the cut.  I’ll also be sharing the slides from the other presenters here, too, as they’re posted!

The gender representation work is part of a longer analysis that I will be posting in full soon!

Beneath the cut are also a few additional slides that I would have presented with a bit more time – several of which address things that came up in the question session.  Edit: warning for some mature text content in the extra slides.

Edit 2: Also, if you want more notes about when and how I collected this data (e.g., some of the data in the first section is a couple years old), or you want to get at the raw data, check out the links in the speakers notes in my Google Slides!

…And the extra slides (content warning for mature themes in text):

So: all these stats, and not a single thing relating to fans of color. Uh HUH.

Yeah, I really wish I’d been able to do the same kinds of analysis for race. :-/ It’s an unfortunate limitation of my methodology… AO3 tags don’t tend to mention a character’s race, and I’m only basing these on what AO3 tags say (I write scripts to scrape and crunch large amounts of data based on tags, rather than hand categorizing things). IMDB also doesn’t include character or actor race as a standard field, which is where I got some of my gender data. Suggestions for how to capture race from AO3 or online databases are very welcome, if anyone has them!

Edit: for what it’s worth, the talk was advertised as addressing gender and sexuality in particular; I should have clarified that here. It wasn’t that I thought race wasn’t important!

I highly recommend @centrumlumina ’s annual ship stats, which do address race! Also tagging @agentem , who expressed interest in another reblog.

Sorry but I’m still ranting because now that I’m back from the justice league high, I’m just noticing all the bullshit.

So Diana basically said that she gave up on saving the world because she lost Steve???? WTF I’m sorry but HOW IS THAT COHERENT WITH THE WONDER WOMAN MOVIE?

After Steve died, she actually saved the world and ended the war… did everyone actually forget her « it’s not about deserve, it’s about what you believe and I believe in love » We literally saw her flying in the end of the movie which led us to think that she kept saving the world and that the reason she gave up on men was probably because of something that happened afterwards. Maybe that men kept having wars like World War II even when Ares died.

Why would she give up on saving the world for Steve? When the movie Wonder Woman proved that she didn’t give up after he died????

This is so dumb I hate this stupid movie, everything is a mess
