Part 1

The school had made waves when it first opened its doors, 7 years ago. A lot of press had shown up in front of their nondescript building, a repurposed elementary school that had been abandoned and quite possibly haunted for a long while prior to this acquisition. The school had been tagged as being just another fad, like the ‘finishing schools’ butler cafes ran to train newbies and whatever the hell creepy ass counterpart there is for barely-legal maids.

Doujinshi are Japanese fan comics; most of the time, they are derivative works of popular anime/manga/video game series. Creating doujinshi is a popular pastime in Japan; in fact, some famous manga authors/groups (such as Clamp, Gainax, and Kiyohiko Azuma) began their careers by creating doujinshi. A common misconception is that all doujinshi are pornographic, but in reality there are many non-explicit doujinshi. 

Although doujinshi is readily accessible in Japan, it’s much harder to get a hold of for those of us who live outside of it. But hope isn’t lost; you just need to familiarize yourself with proxy websites and be willing to spend money on international shipping. I decided to create this guide to help people who want to collect doujinshi but don’t know how to get started. Before I begin, I just want to say that the websites I’m recommending are from my own personal experiences. I’m sure that I’m missing a lot of great websites, so if you know of any, feel free to add onto this post!

There are several websites one can buy doujinshi from, and an even bigger number of proxy websites to use to buy them. I started collecting doujinshi in mid-2013, but only bought them via eBay until around March of 2014, when I finally branched into Japanese websites. Aside from eBay, there are three websites I’ve bought nearly all of my doujinshi from.

Psychology time!

This isn’t having a short attention span (or well maybe thats part of it), but probably something called “Optimal Arousal.”(This is psychology, not anatomy, please keep your mind out of the gutter Xp)

Optimal Arousal goes like this: When effort is low, more stimulus is better. When effort is high, less stimulus is better.

I’ll elaborate. Whenever you do something easy (like maybe some homework as an example), unless something else is happening (like music or a show) you tend to get drawn away or doze off. In this homework scenario, the effort is low, so in order to keep at it and do well on working on it, you need a higher amount of stimulus, like a movie.

If something is hard, like for instance a test, you probably will try to avoid noise, going so far as to hush others so you can concentrate. The effort is high so you want less stimulus.

Keep this in mind. It can help you focus, and make life a lot easier. Dont feel bad for doing lots of different things while you are just chillin. Enjoy the knowledge!

This is also the reason that when people get lost or are trying to find an unfamiliar destination, they turn their car stereo down.

Whoa wait turning down the music so you can “see better” is a real thing and not just something to poke fun at?

I FEEL SO FUCKING VINDICATED

Adding on: Turning down the music to see better is your brain’s way of being able to “transfer more power to other senses.” Because you’re “not able to hear as well,” your brain will compensate by making your other senses stronger. It’s the reason why deaf people usually have better sight and peripheral vision, and why blind people can generally hear better than individuals that can see.
