Rin Matsuoka’s Sydney apartment

Apologies if there are already multiple posts about this, but having visited and fallen in love with Sydney, I went above and beyond to do research lol.

Season 3 of Free! has started, and I’ve been eager to see where Rin is living in Sydney because KyoAni does insane location research for their shows. The Australia episode in season 2 was meticulous with detail. We finally got to see Rin’s everyday life in last week’s episode (ep. 3); he’s still going to the same pools, but his apartment is new.

Knowing how spot-on the animation company draws locations, I thought I’d see if I could figure out where he was at based on the clues we were given since I have at least a small amount of working knowledge of Sydney. The reddish building with a view of water out his window, the church, the distinctive architecture, and geographic memory of where the pools are located were what I was making educated guesses with.

Searching with Google Maps via satellite (bless the Google car) wasn’t yielding anything, so I reverse image searched the apartment building. I got one hit, a tweet by one of the feature writers at CrunchyR – shoutout to William! – who had somehow miraculously located the building and the street corners with real photos, but didn’t say where they were. So I reverse image searched the real building photo and the Sirius Building came up.

Ironically, the building up until early this year housed roughly 80 units with much sought after views of the Harbor and Bridge as the only hi-rise apartment complex in The Rocks. It’s up for sale now for a variety of money/view related reasons. The Rocks, as a lot of you know, is smack in the heart of the Harbor and next to the Opera House. The Russell Hotel is in The Rocks (it’s two streets away from Sirius). Natsuya is/was staying in The Russell Hotel, so it’s an easy drop off for Rin. The reddish building in his window is a distinctive warehouse and the water is the harbor itself.

At first I thought the church was St. Mary’s, which is located next to Hyde Park where the fountain he takes Haru last season is at, but it doesn’t appear to be. The North Sydney Olympic Pool is a 15 min ferry ride across the harbor. Rin’s apartment is right at the other end of the bridge.

The only thing I’m trying to figure out – he’s clearly jogging to practice in these scenes, but The Rocks are nowhere near the Olympic Aquatic Centre (it’s 19 km).

The closest train stop is closer than the distance he appears to be jogging, so maybe he’s jogging partway to the direct line. He seems to have picked an apartment out of nostalgia instead of convenience haha. And it couldn’t have been cheap; The Rocks is full of boutique hotels, trendy restaurants, and is where cruise lines dock.
