“I cannot play Loki forever, it’s not possible,” says Hiddleston, who turned 36 last month. “Loki is immortal and I’m deeply mortal. Regeneration, at some point, will be required, I’m not quite sure when,”
The Russos say:
“I think anyone would also understand that you can’t continue to play these characters forever. We’re not… Comics you can keep re-drawing the characters the same age for decades, right. We’re all aging. And there are new ideas and new stories to tell. Look at the incredible success of Black Panther. There’s a new direction that the Marvel universe needs to go and that’s about specifics where society is today and how audiences react and the storytelling that is not the same as it was a decade ago. I think they can make much more interesting choices moving forward, when we close the final page of this book.“
Seems like almost everyone believes Loki had a sexual relationship with the Grandmaster, and to be quite honest, this idea bothers me a lot.
Why? Because I don’t like the idea that he *had* to make himself a prostitute (to a manipulative ruler) in order to achieve a higher status and essentially *survive* being on Sakaar.
Now I know some people are shipping them together in jest (aka crackship). But let’s consider an alternative idea:
The Grandmaster lusted after Loki and Loki used to this to his own advantage. Loki is far more clever and cunning than people are giving him credit for. Loki was able to ‘string’ the Grandmaster along, playing with his interest without having to partake in any of his desires/wishes.
Here’s an idea I like from a twitter user:
“ok but other than the Grandmaster being Loki’s sugar daddy, the dynamic of the Grandmaster WANTING to be Loki’s sugar daddy and FAILING bc Loki keeps slithering away, and the Grandmaster going more and more OTT with the gifts…
bc he thought Loki was just playing hard to get, and just as he bribed Loki with the orgy ship (“you can use it whenever, the code’s your name now, just make sure you invite me along when you use it”) Thor shows up“
I just think Loki would have zero interest in having a sexual relationship with the Grandmaster and wouldn’t let himself be used in such a way. (Plus Loki appears to be uncomfortable around the Grandmaster anyway)
Edit:
I see some comments about Norse Mythology Loki, and how he was into all kinds of stuff. Not denying that! But this is Loki from Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, who is veryloosely based on the myth.
Heck, MCU Loki isn’t even like the comics Loki! I think we should treat MCU Loki, or Tom Hiddleston’s interpretation of Loki, differently from any other incarnation of the character.
AS much fun as I have reading smutty frostmaster, this makes a valid good point, that sounds more in keeping with Loki MCU’s personality, to string the old guy along for stuff and power.
Here is a real radical idea. There was no sex involved at all. No playing hard to get or whatever. Honestly, is that really all people think that Loki is useful for. A master sorcerer, strategist, etc. The only thing that the Grand Master might have found useful is the fact that he is a good looking guy. Is that why he kept Valkyrie around? No, she brought him people for his games. Who knows what Loki’s expertise was but the idea that it was only his body is hardly the most realistic and honestly isn’t supported by anything in the movie.
People can say what they want about the previous Thor FILMS, but the one thing that was never a problem was THOR himself. Thor:Ragnarok and Infinity War didn’t suddenly make Thor interesting, funny and charming, it puts that all upfront and made sure you knew it. It put his potential on full display for all to see.
Basically Chris Hemsworth has always been great as Thor lol. But, I think all MCU Thor fans already knew that though, I’ve just been slightly rolling my eyes at the recent articles I’ve seen mentioning how Marvel finally got Thor right, when I think those people were just actively not paying attention.
I’ve had talks and talks about Tom, Loki and Marvel.
My biggest concern of course was always Tom’s welfare, not exactly Loki’s. Loki’s fictional.
Surely I hated to see him go that way.
But did you see my posts? I’m totally in denial. I was in denial even before the Durham cathedral pics surfaced. I still am.
This is NOT the way to kill off a character, this is NOT the way to “give Thor a quest” or “a vengeful arc” or whatever. I know Loki can’t exist without Thor (and maybe he only exists because of Thor), and I know Thor is an Avenger, not Loki. At the same time I call bs on every little theory that says “Loki had to die because Thor needed the motivation”, “Loki had to die because he was distracting us from Thanos’ storyline”.
As for the Russos reportedly saying “Tom is too old to play Loki” I call bs on that too, because this is NOT what they said. They were evasive af during the whole podcast. Josh was supposedly pinning them to the wall when he simply… copy/pasted all the angry fan arguments against IW from reddit, tumblr and who knows where else. I don’t believe for a minute the Russos didn’t take a look at those questions before the interview itself, or that the whole thing wasn’t somehow orchestrated in advance in order to have those answers ready and appease the angry fans.
Btw some people said Josh should have stood up for Tom. He is not my favourite person in the world but in his defence let me say he was just doing his job, I mean what was he supposed to say? Jump on the Russos because they “didn’t treat his Tom right”?
Btw I’m still angry, even angrier now because when you listen to them, all those arguments sound very rational, right? But if you read them they make no sense at all. And yes, they never said that specifically Tom was too old to play the part, in reality that was ONE OF MANY EVASIVE ANSWERS (insert: stupid arguments) to dodge Josh’s questions. Sure they sounded like they made a lot of sense, like “Who’s to say the next Guardians film won’t take place in the past?” (cleverly using “Captain Marvel”s timeline that is so hot right now) but they also said “Who’s to say the next ‘Black Panther’ film won’t be about Okoye?”. Lol wut, Danai herself denied the rumour of an all-female MCU film for the time being, correct me if I’m wrong. So yes, the Okoye-is-Black-Panther argument was obviously a joke.
I have no doubt whatsoever that “(Tom or Idris) might be too old to play those characters forever” was an evasive joke as well.
I mean look at all their arguments.
Why was the Brutasha reunion so rushed? – Because everything was happening at a fast pace and they knew they had a war upon them.
Why was the Stucky reunion so lukewarm? – Because Steve and Bucky had already met before.
Why was Wanda’s accent too American? – Because she had trained with Black Widow to hide like a spy.
Why did Thor miss Thanos’ head? – Because he wanted to see Thanos suffer/answer for his crimes/know why he was dying.
o__O
What the FFFFFFFFFFF…..
Thor not going for the head “because sentiment”
and purposely stalling, having a little chit-chat with Thanos instead of just KILLING THE BASTARD,
is the stupidest argument I’ve ever heard. Every character in IW, including Loki, was dumbed down on purpose to let Thanos win. There’s no convincing me otherwise.
So to me Loki isn’t dead. We haven’t seen Avengers 4 yet, and, baby, it ain’t over ‘til it’s over.
If he IS dead (and not coming back) then they totally slaughtered a fine character with that dumbass kitchen-knife trick.
However I don’t think people in Marvel actively hate on Tom. It’s just that… I’ve said this before. Tom/Loki was their cash cow back in 2012-2013 when he was younger and they exhausted the man by encouraging him “to be himself”, spontaneous, happy-go-lucky, a darling to the fans, always ready to please, never denying anyone anything. Not warning him that there are limits and dangers by being so open and eager. I’m also pretty sure they pushed all his buttons like his passion and dedication, his workaholism, and Tom said more than once that his biggest fear was “regretting NOT doing something”. Obsessive compulsive maybe? He also said that he knew he wouldn’t always be in the limelight so he “took advantage of the time he got”. Who’s to say Marvel didn’t push/encourage him to do that? Hence exhausting him.
And now that he’s tired he probably can’t play that part anymore. Surely he’s a professional and he’ll go to the ends of the earth to promote IW with a three-piece and smile on his face but he’s already sent a clear message to the media that he won’t dance for them like he used to do – and Marvel knows that.
So now they’re pushing all the young ‘uns like Peter Holland and Letitia Wright because, of course, they’re younger, with more stamina, and not as disillusioned and tired as Tom is. More eager. And maybe, after the success of their latest film, Marvel just doesn’t need Loki anymore. They found a new cash cow.
Maybe Tom is tired of playing Loki as well, although he’d never openly admit it because he’s a professional and because he truly loves the character.
But… yeah.
He can’t love Loki forever, because he isn’t Loki. He is Tom, and he has stuff to do.
I try not to project my own frustrations about Loki on Tom. He’s not Loki.
Of course he cares for the character but he gets paid to film, he gets paid to do the promo tour, he gets paid to smile, and he gets paid to die.
If he wants to move on, it’s his right. But unless he shows some kind of discomfort towards Marvel I won’t put words in his mouth, I won’t pretend to know what’s in his head. I’m sure if he didn’t like the whole thing he wouldn’t have agreed to do the IW promo tour as he wouldn’t sign up for ACE Comic Con this June either. Nobody’s making him do anything.
But it’s the truth, Marvel has moved on to newer, hotter faces and franchises.
Also, they know exactly what to do and what to say to make us all talk about their newest product, having us unwillingly participate in the buzz and the promotion. We’re angry and sad and we’re working for them FOR FREE. They know Tom won’t dance for them anymore.
But we will.
Personally, I won’t stress too much over Loki’s death.
