Wasn’t going to post anything for another few weeks because my graduation induced 3 weeks long break seems to have made my skills hit rock bottom. But ended up trying to make something with my warlock son during the breaks. I mean this silly show has been literally the only source of positivity I had in the past 2 months so there is that.
You know what i hate about this? In the book, Magnus is genuinely moved by Alec’s sympathy to the Downworlders, but with this “You seem… sympathetic.” line, it feels like just an off-hand comment just to have an excuse to ask Alec out. And not to mention the fact Alec is supposed to be the one who makes the first move in their relationship.
I think he did use it as a line. But I also think Magnus is treating this as he treats all his relationships: with careless indulgence. Just like in the books. However, I don’t think it takes away what he truly thinks about Alec. That’s why Alec becomes Magnus’s True Love (of sorts) and outshines everyone.
can you people stop with that “just like in the book” bullshit with me. If it’s like the book then i wouldn’t say anything about it. Book!Magnus HATES Shadowhunters. Book!Magnus would never ask a Shadowhunter out first, he might flirt for fun, but that’s about it. Book!Magnus did think of his first date with Alec as a one-time fun thing, because Alec is a shadowhunter, who Magnus would never think of being serious with. And he didn’t ask Alec out just to be an ass about it, because he DIDN’T ask Alec out. And he did put efforts in his date with Alec, even though he still did all the wrong things because he never date a shadowhunter before, because he.would.never.ask.a.shadowhunter.out! Did i say Magnus would never ask a shadowhunter out? Because he wouldn’t, ever! Show!Magnus asks Alec out because he thinks Alec is pretty, and being pretty is enough to forget all the things shadowhunters did to him, to his kind. That’s how shallow (current) show!Magnus is. And don’t start with “but he may change in the future” because you don’t know that, i don’t know that and i only care about what this show gives me right now. And how can you possibly know “what he truly thinks of alec”? do you have the script? are you him? i guess not, so it’s all just your speculation right now, and no offence but it’s kinda not convincing at all.

Part of the reason I don’t want to watch Shadowhunters is because they have Magnus asking Alec on their first date. Maybe I am being misled because I am going off all the gif sets I’ve seen, but that is upsetting to me. A major part of their relationship is the fact that Alec asks Magnus out first. Alec is the one who reaches out. It takes so much courage for Alec, who is not even openly gay with his parabatai or his parents, to go out of his way to ask an immortal warlock- a downworlder, no less, who is still not on great terms with The Clave (to whom Alec is ever loyal)- on a date. His first date. Ever. And Magnus is impressed with his courage, he respects Alec for trying when he could easily shy away due to lack of experience.
Look I understand that this scene was not in The Mortal Instruments-it was only mentioned in The Bane Chronicles, and written out in full on Cassandra Clare’s website- but it so important for their relationship and for Alec’s character development. Having Magnus ask him out takes away from Alec’s character development and that breaks my heart.
Disclaimer: Again I haven’t watched the show and I am only going off gif sets and what people have told me, but Malec is important to me and I thought I should put this out there. If I am incorrect in this please tell me and I will give the show a shot, but if anything else like this is going on in the show I don’t want to ruin the beauty of the Shadowhunter books. Also, I don’t want anyone to feel I am judging them for watching the show and appreciating it for what it is. This my personal opinion, thank you.
