well, the thing is: i never buy the whole jonathan situation, the way cassandra clare handled it was cliché and unrealistic. okay, maybe there is another person behind all the evil, but imo the demon blood is not the only thing that shaped his personalities, the way valentine raised him have its influences as well. Considering Jace, who is supposed to be the representation of goodness (since he has angel blood and all), still turned out to be an asshole after spending his childhood with valentine, i doubt jonathan would be much different. Also i ship characters based on chemistry, and so far from a few scenes with “good” jonathan, i didn’t see enough of his personalities to ship him with anyone. 

okay but like the mortal instruments is an urban fantasy series? yes there should be character development (and i personally think there is) but it isn’t going to be about characters having ‘plotlines’ per say, it is meant like 99% of fantasy-ish genres to be about the bigger save-the-world type thing? characters are only there to carry out that plot i suppose? this is hard to word bc i think characters are the most important thing but also characters dont need individual plots to develop?

i feel like everything that was just said is pretty harsh on tmi and cassandra clare like i’m not saying it’s perfect but i don’t think she put no thought into alec and his development as a character? and also like he’s clearly not just there for representation, there needed to be more than just ‘the holy trinity’ of characters for so many reasons and i don’t think it’s some kind of bad thing that she made one of them gay. i think it’s a very good thing, ‘pointless’ representation is not evil??

okay i will be honest i don’t understand your point here anon? the OP of that Alec post is the one who said that Alec has no individual plot and i simply stated that it’s actually not

Alec but lots of other character as well, and it’s not fair of her to say “he has no plot line so i don’t like him at first” (because other characters have no plot line either but she still like them right?). And she also said Alec has no character development until CoHF which i disagree as well because for me he is the one with the most character development??

However i agree with you here ‘characters dont need individual plots to develop’ and Alec is the perfect example, but honestly other than him i don’t see character development in other characters at all??? (okay maybe i’m a little bit biased here). And okay i admit it’s a little harsh to say Cassandra Clare didn’t put any thought into alec character, but i feel that effort isn’t much compare to the time she spend on character like Jace or Simon because as many already pointed out, the way she described Alec’s personalities is all over the place like sometime i feel she doesn’t know what to do with him at all and just write what her fans want??

As for the representation in her book, well, i might not be the best person to talk about that since i’m straight, so whatever she wrote doesn’t have very much effect on me, but i suggest  you go to snarktheater or terresdebrume blog, they had a lot to say about Cassandra Clare’s representation and why is not a good thing

i don’t actually like matthew as alec and i didn’t exactly DISlike it until people started behaving this way because like?? y’all were calling alec whiny and an asshole and talking copious amounts of shit about one of the first characters i ever read about that i could relate to and it hurt me and it irritated me and NOW they cast someone you think is hot as him and suddenly you’re singing a new tune? nope.

same, anon same. and the thing that annoyed me the most is those people actually admit that they never like Alec before matt was casted, like nope stay in your fucking lane and away from my son (btw, not that i dislike matt, i think he is gorgeous but i still prefer dylan sprayberry as alec)

no actually, it’s just me feeling a little bit cranky today. the amount of people who never actually care about alec before but now posting/reblogging post about “appriciate alec lightwood more in the show” is bothering me for a while now. it’s more matt that they want, not alec. those kind of people make it really hard for me to like matt as alec you know
