AND ANOTHER THING why is marie suddenly so pale hmmm??? :))))

like why the literal fuck have they made the only brown man in the series who a) isn’t a goddamn villain and b) is a regular in these upcoming arcs in particular so much paler than he’s supposed to be? why have they decided to make this brown man so much less brown? what’s up with that anime team? what THE FUCK is up with that? 🙂

apparently colorism is the Only Option™ when an anime team likely over did it on the Shiny Animation Style budget.

OF COURSE OF COURSE they had to drop more of their budget on other important things, like making allen look like an infant and the EXPANSION OF EVERYONE’S NOSES

Notice how they made him bald and took away his dreads….

I think this problem goes way back before Hallow actually? This piece Hoshino made during the original publication of the Phantom Thief G arc (and subsequently also featured in her artbook Noche and B&W in Volume 18 or 19!) and Marie is much much paler than his first anime self which always struck me as odd. v

However, looking back upon Marie’s earlier arts by Hoshino I discovered that there is no (or at least none that I could find) art of him by Hoshino herself (since she is the Source Material!) where he had dark skin. I’m discounting the anime from my search since it is an ADAPTION of D.Gray-Man and not it’s Source Material. Volume 15 Cover: v

Whilst Marie is always depicted slightly darker than all the others, he’s never been depicted as dark as he was in the first anime, as such I’m led to believe that Marie’s depiction in the first anime was a decision made by the animators and the subsequent white-washing was an attempt to make the colours more accurate to those that Hoshino provided.

It’s quite the peculiar predicament since many fans, particularly those who were introduced to DGM via the anime (myself included), perceived Marie as a very dark skinned character especially since he was rarely featured in colour pages and along with other indications that he was not white (the dreadlocks). This suggests to me that Marie is still a POC, but lighter skinned than his original anime counterpart.

Please note that I’m not trying to excuse the anime of white-washing Marie but these are simply my observations! If anybody has any artwork MADE BY HOSHINO HERSELF that contradicts my findings from Noche, please do share them! Nor am I saying that dark skinned depictions of Marie are wrong (I still picture him this way), I’m just noting that it seems to be different from the way Hoshino depicted him, and that DGM:Hallow is doing its best to replicate the characters as Hoshino sees them and that it is perhaps this reason Marie has been white washed. Hallow’s accuracy with colours would also explain the change of  Timothy’s  hair colour from complete blue to the brown & blue combo that Timothy sported prior to his full innocence activation in the manga. Yo, just leaving my two cents, but this whole ‘whitewashing’ of Marie business is being taken out of proportions, because in the manga he’s actually much lighter than the first anime adaption (reference on the manga’s 15 volume cover). personally, marie looks better with darker skin but i’m not about to ignore canon, idk.

dgmhallow:

it is of my own belief that even mangaka’s can white wash their own characters. tyki and marie aren’t white, and while they are canonically depicted as otherwise in the manga by hoshino (by her own means or by the direction of others), they are being white washed. this is especially true for marie, because the older anime was also supervised by hoshino, and they did decide to have marie black. you don’t just change a person’s ethnicity out of nowhere?

dude, hoshino didn’t get to decide everything about the anime. sure, she can make suggestions here and there, but in the end, the one who decided the direction the anime is going is the anime team. so the choice for Marie’s skin color in the 1st anime could be the anime team’s decision, not hoshino – therefore, it’s never canon in the first place (seriously, when will ppl stop thinking the anime as canon? it’s just a fucking adaptation, but like in animation. i don’t see anyone think the way Dumbledore asks Harry about the goblet of fire thing in the 4th movie as canon, so why is anime different???). go on, try to find ONE picture where Marie is dark skin in the manga. if you can’t, then don’t blame Hoshino for things that aren’t her fault : sure, you can picture Marie whatever you want but getting angry at people because they don’t share your HEADCANON is just ridiculous
