What, you don’t think that “Friends?” in the relationship chart mean anything? Nothing?

but that’s kind of it, isn’t it, are they even friends after growing up together through their teen years? Or are they just superficially questionably ‘friends’ because they’ve lived in the same place?

I don’t see why it’s so hard for it to be clear that they are friends, even a grudging ‘he can be annoying” from Kanda would’ve be in character and sufficient.

I know some people interpret the question mark like ‘maybe they’re more…than friends…?’ or something, but the vibe I get unfortunately comes down to whether either of them truly cared enough about each other over the years to come to a point that’s concrete

Feel free to disagree though, I am just making more angst for myself

Boy that is quite a lot of angst. I mean to me it’s always been who cares what actually happen in canon, that’s why we write fanfic in the first place, yeah? (Hell Allen/Earl is now canon I don’t see anybody writing that). But here’s another thing. I always thought Hoshino kind of made up Alma as a “girl lover soul in a boy’s body” so her fans can swing Kanda whatever way they want. If they want Mary Sues – well, nebulous girl!Alma here you go. If they’re into yaoi there’s the guy version. So this makes me think that she wants to keep shit “open” for whatever reason. So if us fans scream loud enough it’s not impossible for anything slightly concrete to happen.

I say this because once upon a time I shipped Hei and Yin pretty bad in Darker Than Black, 1st season. There was very little indication of their relationship being anything more than co-workers, if that. And then 2nd season come along WHAM they’re canon couple I’m like O_O (Although the entire 2nd season Yin is, get this, kidnapped elsewhere while Hei tries to find her with this other girl..o_O) So, yeah, um, well, fan service is a powerful thing?

Ohh, can i chime in? I think your opinions are both right tbh!

1) Yeah, that’s definitely the angstest way of reading that ‘friends?’ label XD but it’s still got its points and i myself have got this tiny pessimistic vision to deal with on bad days /cries. The revealing fact on that (imo) is about Lavi:

Did Lavi first approach Kanda (or anyone, really) as a bookman or as a genuine friend?

Given how relevant the whole second generation exorcists is (/aka what a good study material Kanda is for any bookman/) and how much un-feeling / un-caring Lavi was when he first joined the Order, it’s more likely the former reason to be true. (And thus → Lavi didn’t truly care enough for Kanda nor Kanda ever cared back either i bet). But

Did Lavi remain the same as he first joined the Order during the two years prior the series starts?

If i re-think about what Doug (DGM Reverse Novel, ch.2) says about Lavi (on their first mission: Your eye is like glass. It reflects me, but that’s all. Nothing reaches inside; and then one year later, on their second mission together: You’re a little different, Lavi. Now you actually meet my eyes when we talk) and also about how Lavi reacts to Doug’s words himself (It enveloped Lavi with a warmth greater than that of the sun, moving from the peak of the sky to the horizon) then i get he had already changed a lot by the time DGM starts, and if that’s so then why not thinking he started liking people a bit more and shaping truer bonds? and why not thinking his reasons for accosting Kanda in the first place did change too? and that as result Kanda’s previous annoyance / coldness to/for a fake started also to fall? In that way the ‘friends?’ could very much mean they surprisingly became friends despite their profiles and original intents. Or simply that they’re something else. ((But yeah, maybe that’s still trying to be positive rather than objective and/or pessimistic, lol))

2) that x3! tho i came to the same conclusions while still caring about canon XD

Just wanted to reblog this because this conversation is really nice and filled with informations and shows many sides of the two. I can’t really say more than you already did and I think it’s obvious what I’d wish for them.
But though, I think the relationship between kanda and lavi is kinda special. Kanda cares about all his friends (he don’t show it but it’s obvious) but when he talks to Lavi he seems a little.. I don’t know how to say it. He let lavi call him “Yuu” – saying he don’t want it but never really does anything against and after Alma and Tiedoll he’s the only one allowed to call him this way. I think they’d even die for each other and no matter what’s going to happen next, their friendship will stay special.

i know this post has been ages ago but i found something really interesting on the topic. this is a very old relationship chart from the very beginning of the series (it’s at the end of chap 33, magazine version)

i’m still looking for raw version to be sure but in this chart Hoshino seems to emphasize about the weird (?) relationship between them as well, so this is not just a throw away line in the fanbook but something is definitely going on there. either she wanted to fuck with us (i noticed that she does that with this pairing A LOT, what the hell Hoshino) or she is still thinking (?) about their relationship so it’s still up to debate and hopefully turn out to be something?

I was re-reading some translations of Hoshino’s interview in CharaGray and apparently Kanda’s story was supposed to be completely different and the idea of Alma didn’t occur to her until 2008 so i did a little release date check and now i’m wondering

what could

possibly
