(excerpt from Prince Animage 2014 autumn issue on Makoto)
Not only does his height tower above the rest, Makoto possesses a body of solid muscles developed as a result of his long-term training. He has a gentle personality and is always watching over the others with his smile. Even for the part of him that is easily intimidated by scary things, for him it has become a charm point rather than weakness. Before, when he was terrified by Nagisa’s prank, it was really cute too.
In the second season Makoto’s gentleness is even furthered amplified, as seen where towards the kids at Iwatobi SC Returns, he is always smiling. Crouching in order to be at the eye level as the child, with a serious expression on his face as he speaks to him, it reminds us that indeed, he is the big brother who is constantly looking after Ran and Ren at home.
For this Makoto to suddenly be agitated, it was during the argument with Haruka in episode 11, revealing to us a side of Makoto that we have never seen before. Towards Haruka who he loves, the expression that he bares as he lets out his feelings is one that is really painful; in truth he surely did not wish to have such a confrontation.
Of course, he reconciles with Haruka in the end, and they proceed to the nationals. After graduation, he goes to a university in Tokyo to pursue his dream. Even though he’s together with Haruka, for Makoto he’s going to be popular with both guys and girls in his university.

Spoon 2Di Vol. 57 interview snippet, Utsumi Hiroko on Haru and Makoto’s ‘fight’
—Before going to Australia, having his first fight with Makoto had seemed to be a huge blow to Haruka.
“Makoto rarely expresses emotions of ‘anger’. However, when he does, it has to be for someone else. Up till now Makoto has always prioritised Haruka’s feelings. Even if he feels a particular way, if Haruka is unwilling, he will tend to avoid it. The scenes with him following Haruka with his gaze are also portrayed with such an implication. But just this time, when he realised that even he did not know what Haruka thought, and after hearing Nagisa and Rei’s feelings towards Haruka, he felt that he had to relay his own feelings to Haruka, and so he finally let out his thoughts. But the Haruka at that time couldn’t accept Makoto’s words. He had always believed that Makoto was the one person who would stand by him, so he probably felt betrayed.”
— Which was the scene that left the deepest impression on you?
“I’ve mentioned it earlier, it’s Haruka and Makoto’s fight. I’ve always wanted to draw how Makoto would look when he’s truly angry, so with this scene it felt like ‘I finally have the chance!’ Even though the Makoto in that scene was angry, his expression was that of between anger and on the verge of crying. Having to express that frustration towards Haruka had pained him, and Haruka not seeming to understand had saddened him. If you think about it, this manner of getting angry was just like Makoto. On the side of the Free! series’ music composer, Kato Tatsuya, we explained in detail the impression of the scene, and he placed extra attention to compose the music based on it, it was really touching. The intense setting and melancholic melody integrated very well, and it produced a really imposing scene. From the start of the first season we have made it a point to focus on depicting the image of Makoto reaching out his hand to Haruka. Only in this scene, Makoto was shown to let go. This was part of his growth, and both of their growth. After all, as part of growing up, they can’t be together all the time. The act of Makoto letting go was a big step for him. But it’s definitely not anything to be sad about, and rather, it’s a positive implication of their growth. After all, in the final episode, he reached out his hand to Haruka again, right?”
…and today we find out that the ost is disc 2 track 21, ‘Only for you’ ಥ_ಥ(original translation in Chinese)
please forgive any inaccuracies
Looking at Makoto and Haruka, they’re like:
- “I appreciate you being there for me.”
- “It’s meaningless without you.”
- “I was happy to swim in the relay with you, and everyone else”
- “Makoto looked into Haruka’s eyes. He realized that the one whose heart was being seen through was him. That was how it had always been, since they were children. For someone who never talked about himself, Haruka certainly knew everything about Makoto. He made sure he knew everything. And then, he did Makoto the favor of pretending that he didn’t know. Makoto’s heart was open.”
- “Haruka’s calm gaze cooled Makoto’s burnt-out body and soul. Makoto could feel the waves inside his heart quickly dying down.”
- “Makoto laughs. He was the usual Makoto. The amiable smile with up-slanting eyebrows. He came back to being the usual Makoto. To Haruka’s side––, he came back for him. […]For now, just that is enough, he thought. If Makoto’s here, just that is enough.”
The soundtracks playing during their moments together are like:
- “Always together”
- “I need you”
- “Only for you”
- “Step to hope”
Their duet are like:
- “Always here”
- “My base your pace”
- “Even when we’re troubled or uneasy, we usual two
Take strength from our solid base so that we can keep facing forward even today”- “Your unconscious thoughtfulness, without any malice or reserve,
Makes a pace that brings comfort to my heart, as it always has, unchanged”- “Probably, without even a trace of doubt,
I’ll keep relying on the hand that supports me as I move forward”- “If something has happened, you can tell me any time
I would be glad to be even the slightest help to you”Their scenarios for drama cds include stuff like:
- If he was your boyfriend conversation
NAGISA: Then what about you, Haru-chan? Who would you choose?
HARUKA: …Makoto.
MAKOTO: Me?! x
- Free wake up ambush: Makoto as Haruka’s prince
Rin: Ohh… Sheesh… Here! If it was a mermaid princess, wouldn’t a prince’s kiss turn her into human?
Nagisa: Rin-chan, Haru-chan didn’t turn into a mermaid, he turned into a mackerel!
Rin: Shut up! I don’t know! I’m cutting the call! See you!
Nagisa: A prince’s kiss… Mako-chan.
Rei: Makoto-senpai.
Makoto: Eh!? Me?!
- Duet drama: Makoto and Haruka cooking together
The writers are like:
- Makoto is Haruka’s childhood friend and partner. The relationship of these two is really interesting. There are scenes once in awhile where it’s just the two of them and they’re so close that it almost makes you wonder, “What’s going on with these two……”
- I think the one who was always supporting Haruka from the shadows was Makoto. I think it’s because Makoto was there that Haruka was able to make it this far without stopping
- I think that Makoto would be the other half of Haruka.
- The pulling hand is done in the image of the person always extending his hand to Haruka, Makoto.

And I’m like
I just saw someone in the MH tag saying that it’s been stated that Makoto and Haru wouldn’t have even become friends if it wasn’t for Haru’s issues (his obsession with water as they put it) and I’m confused. I don’t remember this ever being said by Utsumi, or any other member of KyoAni?
I saw that too and nope, I don’t believe it has been said at all by any of the staff, hence why I just scroll past it.
There was no source, so it ain’t worth my time at all.
This is such a joke, really. Haru like to swim when he was a kid but not enough to make him want to join the swim club until Makoto suggested it. His obsession with water didnt exist until Rin came to his life & made him feel guity for winning & stop swimming for 4 years => and i didnt make this up, it was stated by KyoAni in an interview FROM SEASON 1. This fandom is getiing more & more ridiculous
Haru and his scaredy-cat Makoto
What’s a soulmate? It’s like a best friend, but more. It’s the one person in the world that knows you better than anyone else. It’s someone who makes you a better person. Actually, they don’t make you a better person, you do that yourself because they inspire you. A soul mate is someone who you carry with you forever. It’s the one person who knew you and accepted you and believed in you before anyone else did or when no one else would. And no matter what happens, you’ll always love them. Nothing can ever change that. Make sense?

UPDATE!!! RIN’S OTHER HALF IS SOUSUKE AFTER ALL!!!
found this interview snippet on twitter and…UHHH
Interviewer: As for Haruka and Rin, after doing that together and being next to each other, as well as committing to the same thoughts of swimming, you would think that they are two complements of each other, but what are your thoughts?
Utsumi: Well…I would not say that Haruka and Rin are halves of each other. If anything, I think that Makoto would be the other half of Haruka. As for Rin, it’s clear that the person who understands him the most is Sousuke, and this has been reiterated in High☆Speed. For Haruka and Rin, although they definitely complement each other, if it wasn’t for the common interest of swimming that they both have, they probably would not have become friends because of their opposite personalities.
REBLOGGING BECAUSE UTSUMI SAID RIN’S OTHER HALF IS SOUSUKE AND also she feels that Rin and Haru would not have been friends if it wasn’t for swimming.
