I’m sad Malec doesn’t get that happy ending that Sizzy gets, but I can accept it easier than I could for Sizzy. Magnus was always immortal. He knew from birth that unless he loves an immortal, he will outlive his love. Malec always had that imbalance of mortality. Sizzy, however, did not. Yes, they got together after Simon became immortal, but they met when Simon was human. Simon had mortality and it was stripped away from him and I was glad to see him get it back.

ooh, no don’t get me wrong, I’m glad Simon is human, even though I liked him as a vampire more. But even though Magnus has always known, has always lived knowning he would outlive them all, it doesn;t make it easier for him. I think it makes it harder. Magnus is over 300 years old and he has finally found the one. I think that he deserves to die with that person by his side. Yes, Sizzy met as both mortal, but their relationship itself was just as imbalanced as malec’s one. So I don’t see that as a reason myself, but if you do that is okay. But  I don’t think Magnus should be punished for not having been mortal to begin with, he can not change that.

I guess the problem with this ending also lays in the fact that Magnus himself has said he was looking for a cure, that he wanted to be mortal with Alec. He said he was tired of being immortal. So for that to not change is a bitter pill to swallow, if you are a Magnus fan. Or to suddenly be completely erase even (Which happened in cohf)
They both deserve to die happily of old age, but it was sadly only granted one of them and only granted one couple. And most readers forget that, or approve it. I just have a hard time understanding why. And the thing I slightly dislike as well is that the LGBT characters of the book get stuck with the crappy ending, which sadly has been the norm in Hollywood etc. So I was hoping Cassandra Clare would not go down that road.

Except for the fact that Magnus chose not to become mortal. He knew of a way to become mortal and chose not to do it. He knew that choice meant he would eventually, one day, watch the one he loves die. He accepted that.

If he had not made that clear in the end then I could probably agree with you. But he did. My cousin borrowed my copy or I’d quote something.

He did say he, but you never get to know why, why did magnus suddenly turn 180 on his opinion. I don’t understand and it seems to me, like cassandra wanted an easy fix, let’s pretend the last books didn’t happen and he never wanted to get ride of it in the first place. I would have understood if he wasn’t that keen to do it right away. He and Alec first need to know they can be together for life and not break up again after a fight.Since they still have massive issue that need to be discussed, even though it doesn’t seem that way in the book. But none of it was explained or anything. So that leaves a very confused and unsatified feeling behind.
Plus hinting heavingly at something and than go 180 on it as a writer is never going to go down well. At least not with me. The couple deserved more than what they got in cohf, a better happy ending and maybe more time for the readers to understand what went through their minds when they came to all these conclusions.

I have a very simple explanation as to why he would pull a 180, though I don’t recall Magnus ever saying that he would 100% become mortal. My explanation, of course, is not an official one.

Fear.

Magnus has always been immortal, it’s the only thing he’s ever known. He has watched mortals he loves die in various ways. I can imagine that he entertained the thought of living out his life with Alec but when it came down to it…he was afraid. There’s nothing shameful about that.

I could also see Magnus deciding that he had more of a purpose than to just become mortal and die. We don’t know what Clare plans. She may have something else for Magnus and Alec to do. Magnus may become mortal yet. We just don’t know.

you are absolutely right. I was discussing this with someone else today and Magnus giving up his immortality is a huge sacrifice. And ALec and Magnus’s relationship is just getting started. They still need to strengthen their bond. And there are many scenario’s that would make it a very hard choice to make. ALec could die the day after Magnus sacrifice, Magnus could die. They could break up.
It’s such a big decision. and I feel that is even an understatement.
It will take time and absolute certainty for Magnus to make this choice and that certainty was not there by the end of CoHF.
But like you said I hope Clare still has plans for them. Even if it’s just an epilogue or something like that. Their story isn’t finished yet, at least it doesn’t feel finsihed. So maybe we still have a story left.

Okay i’ve read a lot of fanfics with the idea of Magnus afraid of being mortal, or death. But in fact he is not. Here is the actual quote from CoHF “He had been close to death many times; so many that the idea no longer frightened him”. He’s even willing to die at the spot so Alec can go back to the human world. That’s like the biggest sacrifice someone can make for the one they love. Compared to it, giving up immortality doesn’t seem that big …
And i don’t think he is afraid of getting old either. Because growing old with someone is something he has never done before and Magnus is not the one who afraid of new experiences.

I’m sad Malec doesn’t get that happy ending that Sizzy gets, but I can accept it easier than I could for Sizzy. Magnus was always immortal. Wait there IS a part where Magnus said he didn’t want to become mortal?????????
Sorry the only thing i remember was Magnus apologize to Alec because he can’t make himself mortal, like in “I can’t do it because there is no way to do it”
Maybe I have somehow skip that part, can somebody quote the actual thing in the book???????

the exact quote is:

“I was thinking about it, you know” Magnus said. “That’s part of why I wanted the Book of White. Immortality can be a burden. You think of the days that strech out before you, when you have been everywhere, seen everything. The one thing, I hadn’t experience was growing old with someone – someone I love. I thought perhaps it would be you.”

This indicates that Magnus wants to be with Alec that way. So the ending of CoHF contradict this quote massively. Without as much of an explanation. Maybe for the moment Magnus still wasn’t sure, I would understand that. They have a lot of issues, but in the end Magnus wanted to grow old with Alec, so i wanted that ending, I still want that ending. They deserve it. Magnus deserves it.

No, no, this part i already knew. What I want is the quote where Magnus said he DIDN’T want to become mortal in CoHF???? Because I have no memory of it????

Luckily I have my Malec pages mark, otherwise it would have taken a while to find.
Magnus says on page 706 of the paperbook version from Mcelderry:
“And you forgive me, for not being able to make you immortal, or end my own immortality."
This can be read two ways, It’s impossible to become mortal in a safe way. But to me it sounds like Magnus himself isn’t willing yet. He has the book of white so he should be able to do.
Does this help?

That’s it? That’s the quote you guys were talking about?
For me it sounds like Magnus can’t do it, doesn’t know the way to do it, rather than don’t want to do it
Yeah, it can be read two ways but i don’t think we should assume Magnus know a way to become mortal & don’t want to do it.
In fact, where is the part he said he KNOWS a way???

(Tbh, i NEVER thought of it the other way because it makes little sense & condradicts with CoLS, so why do people think about that???)

The 5 messages Alec left on Magnus’s answering machine

cheerup-sunshine:

A typ out of the message left on magnus’s answering machine from the launch party in NYC, the transcript is rumoured to be part of the Bane Chronicles when released in November, but I couldn’t wait. So here are the Alec ones:

For the video: x

Message one:

Hi, Magnus. It’s Alec, Alexander. Well, you know that. I’m just calling, because I think we need to talk? I guess you’re busy. Call me back, okay?

Message two:

Hi. It’s, it’s Alec. I guess you’re still busy. That’s okay. I know you have a lot things to do. Just call me back when you’re free. Whenever you’re free, it doesn’t matter what time, I’ll be awake, I really want to talk to you.

Message three:

Hi, Magnus. This is Alec. Alexander. I guess you don’t want to talk to me. I can understand that. But I really think, if we were together, if could just explain… I’m so bad with words. I’m sorry. But you always seemed to know what I meant. I don’t want to lose that. I don’t want to lose you. I want to talk to you so badly, but if I can’t, I guess I’m calling to say… I’m really sorry. I just called to say that.

Message four:

(Drunk alec) No, you listen with your not-calling-back face, you’re making a big mistake. I was the best thing that ever happened to you. Okay statitcally that is not very likely, a lot of stuff has happened to you, a lot of people have happened to you. I think that was what made me do what I did. I just wanted to know that I wasn’t long-down on a long list. I didn’t want to be a pretty mediocre footnote in the story of your life.
Oh God. Oh God, Oh God. Jace, Jace wake up. Jace, how do you delete a message on someone else’s phone.

Message five:

Hi, Magnus. this is Alec. I’m just calling to say that I might have asked a couple of people, who you were actually talking to, if they could possibily put in a good word for me with you. And it has now been brought to my attention that a couple of people might have taken things slightly too far. So, I guess this is me calling to tell you that I’m really sorry. Again. I won’t call again, I won’t text. I’m sorry about all the texts, especially about the one I send at 3.15 in the morning on Wednesday, you know the one. Yeah (sigh) I’m very sorry about that. You can call me or me though, if you ever want to. I don’t expect you will, but I really hope you do. I won’t stop hoping

OMG BEST!

[2/5] Magnus’ loft Magnus’s door was cracked slightly open, and the sounds of music playing softly wafted out into the hall. Today it was Tchaikovsky. Alec felt his shoulders relax as the door of the apartment shut behind him. He could never be quite sure how the place was going to look-it was minimalist right now, with white couches, red stacking tables, and stark black-and-white photos of Paris on the walls-but it had begun to feel increasingly familiar, like home. It smelled like the things he associated with Magnus: ink, cologne, Lapsang Souchong tea, the burned-sugar smell of magic

My father, who art in Hell, unhallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, in Edom as it is in Hell. Forgive not my sins, for in that fire of fires there shall be neither loving kindness, nor compassion, nor redemption. My father, who makes war in high places and low, come to me now; I call you as your son, and incur upon myself the responsibility of your summoning

Magnus Bane
