BECAUSE I’VE BEEN SEEING WANK ABOUT MALEC AND I JUST NEED TO RANT ABOUT WHAT I THINK OKAY

i think people are angry with the fact that she left their ending open more than they hate the ending. As you said “to be honest, the perfect ending – as a shipper – would be for them to get past this and work through it without magic, and then maybe one day magnus finds a totally safe consequence-free way to be mortal and they can live out their days together and all that”, but we might never get to see that ending you was talking about. She left us wondering what would happen, and we might never know, so i think that’s what makes people angry. I’m pretty ok with the ending but I want more, I need more. I will be very happy if Cassie write an actual ending for them after this, but for now, i will still deny that this ending ever happened

COHF SPOILERS

i don’t really think that it’s an open ending though. they’re together and they will be until alec dies. just because magnus stays immortal doesn’t mean it’s not an “actual ending”. they’re together and they decided that they will just have to take what they have and live out their days together. they’ve worked past it and that’s already a happy ending. sizzy got an open ending, bat and maia got an open ending, but malec ended up together. just because eventually alec will die doesn’t invalidate the closure that was given to them.

I think people kinda hope that Cassie will do something different with Malec than what she did with Wessa. Yes, they’re together, but how can you be sure that they’re happy the entire time? Because immortality can lead to a lot of different problems
For example, this is something from TBC ‘Magnus had never been old, had never known how the world reacted to you when you were old, and had not been allowed to be really young for long either’. Imagine when Alec is 50 and Magnus still looks 19, they will still love each other i know, but it will be different. As Camille said ‘You will not grow old together. You will grow apart instead’
Other couples have problems too, but eventually those problems can be solved, or they break up. But Malec’s problem can’t be solved, it will always be there, they only have 2 choice, live with it or break up, and in my opinion, none of it can count as ‘happy’. Cassie didn’t solve their problem, she made them ‘live with it because there is no other opinion’
(Wessa is different though, because according to Cassie Tessa can make herself looks old for Will)

mad-half-hour: Thank you, this exactly.

I’ve honestly been sort of baffled by people claiming the ending between Alec and Magnus is open-ended, because it’s actually about as closed as an ending can be in a novel, imo. They decide that they’re going to be together despite the fact that Magnus is going to lose Alec one day, and will live on past that. That’s a solid decision. When the book ends, they are absolutely, 100% together (unlike, as you pointed out, Simon and Izzy). That isn’t leaving the immortality issue “open” like I’ve seen people claim, or ignoring it. They haven’t “ignored” it at all. In fact, for the first time, they actually frankly and openly discussed it, and came to an agreement about it. They determined that, in spite of the fact that there is no way around it, they still love each other enough to stay together. That’s resolution. They’ve “dealt” with it as much as unavoidable immortality *can* be dealt with. They can’t make it disappear, because Magnus would die instantly, and they can’t make Alec immortal without both changing who he is and violating his person feelings on mortality. So they discuss the only options left available to them: stay together in spite of that and talk through their issues like adults in love, or break up because they can’t get past their issues. They picked the first option.

I can understand being disappointed with the ending. I can understand calling the ending unhappy, because, yeah, it is sort of bittersweet. Ymmv and all that jazz. Some people want ‘till death do us part and then we meet up again in the afterlife romance, and that’s their opinion to have. But it wasn’t by any means “open-ended”.

(Personally, I really, really liked their ending. I definitely wouldn’t have objected to Magnus becoming mortal —that was my ~ideal~ ending— but this was more than acceptable. They’ll spend Alec’s life together and then Magnus will live on, and through Alec he’s learned how to keep living without “calcifying”. Loving Alec has literally saved Magnus from disconnecting with the world. Even if he moves on, Magnus will never be able to forget that, because that’s exactly what Alec taught Magnus he couldn’t do. Jfc these men, ugh, let me love them)

I will say it again, people are not disappointed because of the ending itself. Yes Malec discussed the problem and come to an agreement about it, but the problem itself is not solved. I feel like Cassie can’t think of a way to end this happily without make it sappy, so she chose the easy way out. It’s like they are back to square one, without moving forward at all. Well, maybe with less arguing

In CoFA, Magnus said “There isn’t going to be a next time”. This sentence makes people hope you know. They hope that Cassie will do something about Magnus’ immortality, that Alec is really Magnus’ last love. But then Cassie do nothing, Magnus might live on, and how can we sure that he wont love someone else? Because immortality is a long time to spent alone. I don’t want Magnus to endure his immortality alone. I also dont wan’t him to love someone else. Even if he doesn’t love someone else like he loves Alec (and it’s kind of unfair to that next person). This ending makes Magnus’ words seems like an empty promise & lose its meaning.

Yes, Sizzy has an open ending too. But eventually they will be together even if Simon dont remember (you know, like in ‘The vow’?). But you can see their open ending lead to happiness. But with Malec, there are too many things that can happen (i will quote someone else here, she said Malec’s happiness & future is “unstable and uncertain“ ) which makes people feel like it isn’t finished yet

I don’t think it makes Magnus’ promise empty though. I know he said that when Alec mentioned falling in love next time, but I think, with how the conversation went, he meant it like he won’t love someone the way he loves Alec. (Kind of like how Tessa didn’t love Jem more than Will or the other way around, but rather, loved them differently) Magnus then said that he will never be ready to lose Alec. When Alec asked him what they should do, Magnus said they should just hope. While this means also hoping for another way to gain his mortality, it also means that they can hope to grow together, even if it isn’t in the sense of growing old.”Unstable and uncertain”. Of course it isn’t finished yet, their future isn’t any more unstable and uncertain than the other open endings. Although there is no certain proof that they will be happy the entire time, it’s the same way there is no certainty in them growing apart like Camille said.

While it didn’t solve their problem, it solved how they dealt with it. And if they can work past that, whose to say that it will immediately cause problems? They can live out their days together and they’re happy together and they will be separated by death, but that doesn’t invalidate that they’re happy together.

While I wish that they did grow old together, they’re already happy despite that. Wessa was handled the same way, and no one can say that Wessa didn’t have their happy ending. I trust Magnus and Alec enough to be that way too, to be as happy and fulfilled.

I agree with you that we all want Cassie to pull another Jessa and include Malec in TDA all solved and happy. I really do understand why people aren’t happy with it and I respect that.

I’m just saying that, to me, Cassie did them justice in the things they needed to work out and although it didn’t solve the problem itself, it solved their growth as a couple in handling it and facing it together, which I think is just as beautiful 🙂

But isn’t that what Magnus always do? Loving each person in different way i mean. The way he loved Camille is different from the way he loved Etta, the way he loved Etta is different from the way he loves Alec etc … I think that sentence Magnus said was mean to say "Alec is entire different from others”, but if it means like what you said, then this sentence is even more pointless …

Don’t get me wrong, I think all the developments in CoHF are necessary for their relationship, I just hate that Cassie left it there. Wessa was happy, and we get to see how happy they are, we don’t get to see Malec’s

I think I get it now. I think we can both agree that we want Cassie to write more about their life together, but i think the difference is: it’s okay for you if she stops there, but for us – the one who unhappy with the ending – it’s not okay, we want much more (you can say that we’re greedy people).

And I don’t want she write about them in TDA, i truly don’t. Because it makes me feel like she do that so we have to read TDA! Advertising-wise it’s a good move yes, but i’m so tired of her keep using old characters to make people read her new works. I want her to give Malec a rest jfc they have been through enough just give them a happily ever after ending goddamnit. I want her to finish it once & for all in CoHF or maybe TBC. Or better, give them their own book because they are damn well deserved to be a main character other than background characters of someone else’ story!

Malec – a different ending

Working on a real ending for Malec (because I cant satisfy with their ending in CoHF), here are what I come up so far:

First Magnus has to die. For whatever reason you can think of, but prefered a heroic one, for example saving Alec from a demon attack. They (Alec & friends) then summon a demon (it can be Magnus’ father to add more drama for the situation) to try to save Magnus from the death. (According to Cassie, powerful demons can do that, because Simon is technically dead before he becomes a vampire, now he is still alive. And Jace was dead once too)

Well, you know, because ‘All magic comes with a price’ so they have to pay something. and the demon want Alec’s life – a life for a life. Alec of course is willing to pay it, but others don’t let him it. So they come up with a solution, all of them will give up some years of their life.

For example, Alec’s fate is to live until he is 50, so he has around 30 years left, so the demon wants to take 30 years of Alec’s life. But instead everyone of them give up 6 years (6×5=30) – i only count Clary, Jace, Simon, Izzy & Alec here, but you can add more characters if you want, the more characters the less years they have to give up.

But the demon thinks it’s too easy for them, so he want to add more condition: All the years Alec has left (30-6=24), he will have to give half to Magnus, so both him & Magnus can only live for 12 years more.

And last condition (because i’m a cruel person) is a classic one, when Magnus wakes up he will forget everything that ever happened in the TMI series, from the day he met Jocelyn Fairchild & baby Clary. He is still a warlock though (but he will have no idea that he can only live 12 years more). Don’t worry eventually he will remember just like Simon, but it will take a while, about 1 or 2 years.

With these, finally Magnus can get rid of immortality, they can be together but only for 10 years (honestly it’s quite romantic when you think about it, they can die together AT THE EXACT SAME TIME how cool is that huh. Imagine both of them curl up together on a bed, whisper I love you to each other before both pass away, they can literally die in each others’ arms)

Yes, that’s my final solution for Malec. What do you think? Is it bittersweet enough or should i add more? Maybe 10 years is too long, should i make it 5? (And at moment like this i wonder if i’m a sadist). Of course there are a lot of plot holes (for example, demon always want something that benefit them but all theses condition doesn’t benefit anyone at all) because i just think of it an hour ago, i’m still trying to solve them so the story can be more realistic

P/S: Feel free to use this idea for fanfiction, because i cant write & i do want someone to write this. Just dont forget to send me the link when you finish :3

Thoughts on COHF!Alec

I was thinking the same things and it makes me happy & sad at the same time. Happy because it makes me love Alec even more, but sad because he is no longer a boy but a man now. I will miss the shy, sweet Alec (not that he isnt sweet now, he still is but it’s different). Maybe this is like the feeling of a mother watching her son grows up

And even his relationship with Magnus is not the same, in a good way. Before I feel like Alec depended on Magnus, that they are not completely equal. But now they depend on each other for happiness. I love the part when Magnus said he forgive Alec, Alec didn’t immediately want to get back together. He knows what he wants, what he deserves & that they cant continue if Magnus doesn’t change. And then later it’s Magnus who asks him to go back. Before their relationship was like a newlywed couple, full of emotions & up-and-down. Now it feels steedy, like they can never be separated
