Can’t believe i’m sitting here writing about this again …

Okay, so most people I saw complain about Magnus in CoA & CoG for 2 reasons:
1. He (& Jace) outed Alec againts his will
2. He cut all connection with Alec without properly telling him to pressure Alec to come out!

Here is the reasons why you should rethink about it:

1. No one outed Alec! He did it on his own! Surprised? 

Did everyone actually forgot how the conversation actually go?

No,” he said now, “but you are the only warlock we know who happens to be dating a friend of ours.”
For a moment everyone stared at him— Alec in sheer horror, Magnus in astonished anger, and Clary and Simon in surprise. It was Alec who spoke first, his voice shaking. “Why would you say something like that?”
Jace looked baffled. “Something like what?”
“That I’m dating— that we’re— it’s not true,” Alec said, his voice rising and dropping several octaves as he fought to contain it.
Jace looked at him steadily. “I didn’t say he was dating you,” he said, “but funny that you knew just what I meant, isn’t it?”
“We’re not dating,” Alec said again.
“Oh?” Magnus said. “So you’re just that friendly with everybody, is that it?

Now, can you see the parts I bolded? Jace is not the one who said Alec dates Magnus, Magnus is not the one who said Alec dates Magnus, Alec is.

First Jace said “a friend of ours”, it could be Isabelle, who was not there (so she couldn’t deny it), is a girl and have a history of dating downworlders. Normally, no one would think about Alec in this situation. 

I’m not saying Jace is good friend because he is not, and it’s understandable that Alec panicked, but Jace even asked again what Alec meant, he actually gave Alec a chance to rethink his words here, but no, Alec himself straightly confessed that he was dating Magnus (be refused that he was dating Magnus).

Here, we can see Alec denied the fact they were dating for the first time. Yes, i’m counting.

After Alec denied he were dating Magnus for the first time, Magnus didn’t say anything, he only reacted when Alec said it for the second time.

Now, people will argue that what Magnus said only made the situation worst, but it’s …not?

See, there were 5 people there:
1. Alec, who of course knew he is gay
2. Magnus, who knew Alec is gay
3. Clary, who Alec knew that she knew Alec is gay & Magnus also knew she knew because Alec told him! (see Kissed)
4. Jace, who apparently already knew Alec is gay according to what he said above before Magnus’ comment

So the actually threat left is Simon, who was … not a actually threat? Because he is only a newly turned vampire who have no connection with Alec’s parents (i believe he didn’t even met them at this point of the story)or anyone in the shadow world in general??? Okay maybe he could be a threat but the possibility is so small & do i need to repeat that it’s Alec who started this himself???

(you can continue to talk about Jace’s fault here as you like because i dont care about him)

Conclusion #1: you know what i find funny? No matter how many time Magnus shows that he actually didn’t want to out Alec (his action when Alec was under the fearless rune’s affects, his thoughts in TBC chapter 8, what he said to Clary in CoG), people keep using this moment to shit on him. Just one mistake he made when he was angry & hurt by Alec’s word and now he is a bad person!

2. “He cut all connection with Alec without properly telling him to pressure Alec to come out!" 

Except he was not, because if he really wanted Alec to admit their relationship he would let Alec told his parents under the affect os fearless rune.

So why did he get angry & cut all connection with Alec you ask? Because one can only take that much of his partner telling everybody they were not dating.

Remember i was counting how many times Alec said it? He already said it twice, and right after he woke up after Magnus knocked him out, he said it again! That’s three fucking times & i believe Alec also never exactly confirm they were dating to Magnus (see TBC 8).

So … when someone doesn’t confirm he is dating you, then tells everyone you two are not dating, then it’s perfectly normal for Magnus came to the conclusion that: they, in fact, were not dating.

And do you often properly break up with someone you’re NOT dating? I think not, that would be embarrassing. 

Also, Alec denied their relationship wasn’t the only thing made him mad here. The Inquisitor was accusing him of not doing his job properly because he let Jace get away which is totally Jace’s faults & only happened because Magnus spent all his power to save people’s lives! No one thanks him & he didn’t even get paid for it! If it was me i would be pretty mad too.

But actually, Magnus did said something before he left: "It’s been quite awkward, and frankly, the next time I see a single one of you will be far too soon.” Pretty decent to show someone you’re NOT dating that you’re angry & don’t want to see them again for a while in my opinion. 

Now, i’m not sure if Alec later apologized for his actions or not, but considering the next time he called Magnus, they were in a middle of a more important business, so I guess he didn’t have the time for that.

And what he said to Magnus after he saved him out of the lake was pretty ungrateful, even though he did apologize later. But the important thing i want to focus in this moment was Alec once again, refused to acknowledge Magnus’ feelings for him. That’s 4 times. 

Even though he did give his power for Magnus later, it’s partly because they need Magnus for the battle & the reason Magnus used up all his power was for the Shadowhunter in the first place, so it’s not enough for an apologize

In short: Magnus did say he doesn’t want to see Alec again, & Alec didn’t show any sign of acknowledge this relationship, it’s perfectly normal for Magnus to want to protect himself & cut his connection with Alec.

Last, but not least, the fact is: HE DIDN’T CUT ALL HIS CONNECTION WITH ALEC! HE STILL RESPONDED WHEN IT CAME TO SHADOWHUNTER BUSINESS, HE ONLY AVOIDED PERSONAL CONTACT BECAUSE GOD FORBID HIM FOR WANTING TO PROTECT HIMSELF RIGHT?

Conclusion #2: Don’t even tell me “it doesn’t matter he meant it or not, his actions pressure Alec to come out, the result of is the same”. Even though the result of a murder is the same (someone died), there is a different between intended & unintended murder right?

Final conclusion: Stop being biased toward Alec & be more forgiving toward Magnus. It’s ok to point out what they did wrong, but if it’s to the point where you hate one of them (or the way they were written whatsoever), maybe you shouldn’t ship them in the first place!

Sorry i coundn’t help it but i disagree with so many things i have to write this out:

1. Why did you think Magnus “mock” Alec about the coffee machine thing? I didn’t see any mocking there? All I can see was Magnus hopes Alec know the coffee machine was for him??

2. “Magnus is immortal, so why the hurry?” well, when you like someone you want that person like you back right? You don’t wait for the person to like you to want them to like you back, does this make sense??? It’s not the matter of time. And he wants Alec to feel at home, but he doesn’t need Alec to feel at home, there is a different. It can also means he want Alec to relax around him, which I guess what everyone want with the person they like. Not really a valid question here for me

3.“Magnus’ habit of treating Alec like an object” Magnus said this once, where does the word “habit” come from?

4. I don’t even want to talk about the outing part anymore. No matter how anyone say it just doesn’t change your mind i guess

5. The summoning demon side of the story was a waste of time & boring so i guess we wont talk about that either. But you might want to know that mundanes DO know about demon (I thought you read the fall of hotel dumort before?) and if you’ve read the infernal devices, you would have know what Pandemonium Club really is (oops, spoiler). This is not the first time Clare baits her readers to read her other works so I thought everyone won’t be surprised by now

6. “considering that cecaelia demons were lesser demons who could scarcely cause all that much fuss” oops, looks like we’re talking about it

Pretend you doesn’t care so people wouldn’t think you’re terribly hurt when something happens with the relationship. Pretend you doens’t like someone that much so the person you like wont think they have you in their hand & pay more attention to you. it’s stupid, but it happens, usually for people who are hurt a lot & want to protect themselves in a relationship. Connor Walsh from HTGAWM might be a good example

18. “there’s a fucking demon in his living room” so what is he supposed to do with it? Stare at it all afternoon so it wouldn’t go around messing things up, which is impossible because he can’t get out of the circle?

19. “warlocks are at the bottom of the pyramid” wait a minute, i think i remember Clare mentioned this somewhere, something about other downworlders calling warlocks names, but i cant remember where it was. But being one of the most powerful warlocks & representative in the council sure will make people afraid of him

20. “which is efficient as a filming technique but is just confusing in a book”, now that you mention it, i want to talk about how Clare’s works seem perfect to make into movies. She drags everything way too long in her books but when turned into movie, the time seems normal. All the unecessary details about the characters’ clothes make it easier when people want to make a movie. In short, i think she kind of thinks in the way movie & drama works more than the way books works.

21. “HIS PARENTS/FAMILY DON’T EVEN REMEMBER HIS FUCKING BIRTHDAY” why do people want to turn things angsty. there is nothing indicate that Alec’s parents dont remember his birthday. actually, i think the reason magnus thought alec wouldn’t go to his house that day was because alec told him he would celebrate with his family LIKE THEY DID EVERY YEAR (which is a wild guess in my part but still) AND THE REASON ALEC SUDDENLY SHOWED UP WAS BECAUSE HE FUCKING WANTED TO, BECAUSE SUDDENLY HE WANTED TO SEE MAGNUS WHY CAN’T EVERYONE THINK ABOUT IT THAT WAY?

22. Maybe I should remind you that we never see Alec talks to Magnus about how dangerous it would be for him and why he is afraid to come out, Magnus just know because he knows. So there is a possibility that Alec doesn’t want to talk about it & Magnus reassures him could makes thing more uncomfortable for Alec. And Magnus did make sure no one would talk about what they saw so what is left to say here?

24. “it reminds Magnus that he is ‘powerful beyond the dreams of not only mundanes but most of Downworld.’” so convenience that you left out the most important part of the paragraph “nobody had tried to protect him since he was very young”. In fact, i think you missed the point of the paragraph completely. It’s about Magnus, a helpless child who have to ask for the mercy of those people who think of him as below them. I’m sure his time with the Silent brother was not a pleasant one and he was constantly reminded that he was a filthy downworlder, that’s why he doesn’t want to be helpless like that ever again. But it’s also because no one ever protect him, so he HAVE TO be strong for himself, and can’t think of asking someone for help. It’s about Alec, a shadowhunter who should totally know that Magnus is the powerful high warlock who can take care of himslef and who he should not care about because Magnus is a downworlder but Alec cares anyway & is the one person ever think Magnus is worth protected. It’s not about Magnus being arrogant & proud about his power, it’s about how Alec’s actions make Magnus feels like he matters, because yes no matter how confident he acts there is a part inside him that is unhappy & insecure & wanted to be loved. “The night when Magnus had met Alec, he had just wanted to throw a party, have some fun, act the part of a warlock filled with joie de vivre until he could feel it.”

You wanted more development of Malec’s relationship but i think you just missed the most important development of it.

25. “But well, outdoor making out: I can get behind that, even if I still think it doesn’t quite fit the setting.” considering you just missed the whole point of the previous paragraph, i can totally understand why you missed this one as well. The fuzzies feelings that you just made fun of? That’s the beginning of Magnus falls in love, which makes it totally understandable that he suddenly wanted to kiss Alec. Is this that hard to understand?

26. “the necklace Magnus once bought for Camille which ended up in the Lightwood family” Camille returned it to him when they broke up in TID (spoiler again) and then Magnus gave it to Will (seriously the relationship between these two annoys the hell out of me) who gave it to his sister who became a Lightwood’s wife.

27. “which Magnus doesn’t take seriously because his feelings are *so strong* he can joke around with telling them” please go back to what i said in number … 17 i think? Some people do that to protect themselves, and Isabelle is not his friend, or his anything, so why should he told her all of his honest feelings?

I mean, I guess love at first sight can happen, but tbh I’m pretty skeptical about that.” see, you miss the whole point of this chapter, that Magnus is afraid of falling in love, of getting hurt, and being denial about his feelings for Alec then finally honest with himself & accept his feelings for him. There are actual reasons for both side to falling in love, so no, it’s not early.

32. “since mundanes don’t see the shadow world and there hasn’t been a mundane with the sigh in centuries, BUT WHO CARES ABOUT INTERNAL LOGIC AMIRITE???” Simon can see everything since book 1, apparently you just need someone to tell you the shadow world exist

33. “What could be more relevant, in the middle of discussing whether to curse people or not, to know that whether Magnus and Alec are really dating or not?” well if Magnus date a shadowhunter then the chance said shadowhunter helps her with this situation is higher right?

34. “Still, it’s kinda of sad, and it’s also pretty sad that he’s actually outside of Magnus’ apartment instead of having cake with his parents—I mean, he’s turning 18 for fuck’s sake, it’s a big deal ><” or maybe he did ate cake with his parents it doesn’t take a whole day to eat a cake you know???

All right, so this is a Malec-centric post, and it’s based around a post of Cassandra Clare’s that I’ve been skimming for the past few minutes. Naturally, I was tentative, as her tumblr posts tend to piss me off, but this was a subject that I had addressed often- the abusive and unhealthy elements in Magnus and Alec’s relationship-, and I was curious. 

Mistake. Now you’re decidedly less curious and decidedly more angry. Congrats, Blue.

OKAY SO I JUST WROTE A LONG ASS REPLY TO THIS BUT TUMBLR MOBILE DIDN’T POST IT; I’M SO ANNOYED. Okay here we go again:

A while ago I read a Malec fanfic which described the beginnings of their relationship from their POVs, and that made me understand a lot of their actions better. In that scene in CoA, Magnus said ‘oh so you’re that friendly with anyone’ because he was pissed off and didn’t really think twice to express his anger towards Alec. He just reacted in the spur of the moment, it wasn’t thought through. I think he regretted his outburst later, because when Alec tried to come out to his parents he knocked him out, because he knew Alec wasn’t ready for that, and it was just the influence of the fearless rune. That’s why I don’t think Magnus wanted to out Alec in front of jace or anything, but when people are angry they say things that they wouldn’t say under normal circumstances. 

That leads me to why Magnus was that pissed off. Alec had denied their relationship in front of Jace, although Jace would have given him an opportunity to come out to him. Magnus knows that Alec has a crush on Jace and therefore doesn’t want him to know about their relationship. Alec trusts Jace, but he lived with his secret crush for quite a while and isn’t ready for that bubble to burst just yet. That’s why Alec’s not happy when Jace tells him that he doesn’t care at all if Alec’s dating Magnus. But Magnus doesn’t even know if Alec likes him the way he likes Jace at that point, but Magnus knows that he himself is very much in love with Alec. So Magnus is hella jealous when Alec denies him in front of Jace. He feels like Alec chooses his imaginative relationship with Jace over his real relationship with Magnus. I think it’s not even the case that Magnus is angry about Alec not wanting to come out in public, he’s just angry that Alec chooses to maintain his crush on Jace over acknowledging Magnus as his boyfriend. And when people are hurt and jealous and angry, they sometimes don’t want the best for the person they love, they want them to hurt as well. It’s irrational, I know, but that’s how it is sometimes. Magnus reaction wasn’t a good or wise one, it was just plain human. Something just snapped in his brain and he was in ‘well thanks fuck you too’-mode for that moment. I know, we would expect more of him, being 400 years old and all, but he’s being really ‘human’ (meaning irrational) when it comes to feelings.

What you said about people putting most blame on Alec, I think they just fail to think a bit more into the books. Alec wanting to shorten Magnus’ life (which he didn’t even want to, he just wanted to know more about Magnus’ past) was not the reason behind the break-up, it was just the trigger. The real reason was Magnus being scared about his feelings. Like I said, he’s not very wise when it comes to matters of feelings. Most people aren’t. But that doesn’t make him a bad person. It just makes him a person.

Magnus and Alec are the most human characters in TMI, they make mistakes that actual people would make, and they work though it (although that’s not written down in the books unfortunately). In the end, they’re the most healthy couple of all, because they’re not co-dependant on eachother, and they’re not perfect.

(I’ve written all this without considering the weird timeline in TMI, like Magnus and Alec only having been dating like 3 weeks in CoA, because I never noticed that while reading. It was written as if they had been seeing eachother for months. cheerup-sunshine pointed that out to me a couple of weeks ago, a lot of character – and relationship development in general doesn’t fit with that timeline. That also makes Magnus’ reaction less justified, because he’s not that impatient. Also I have no idea how to fit first kiss, first date, second date, Alec staying over at Magnus’ place at least two times, Alec’s 18th birthday and Alec being traded for Jace in 3 weeks time. It’s just not possible. So I’m just gonna ignore that timeline because it doesn’t make sense.)
